Corporal punishment \u2013 loosely defined as the beating, hitting, or kicking of the\u00a0body to discipline or punish, by a person in a position of authority relative to a\u00a0person in a subordinate position \u2013 is not a social phenomenon unique to Japan. Despite recent movements towards its eradication, corporal punishment remains a widely used disciplinary practice\u00a0throughout the world, more commonly used by parents at home than by teachers\u00a0at school. Corporal punishment has been used in\u00a0Japan for centuries, but it was first labelled \u2018taibatsu<\/em>\u2019 in the Meiji Period. This\u00a0chapter demonstrates how the definition and educational value of taibatsu\u00a0have been debated ever since, and how the term has alternatively been seen as a\u00a0\u2018solution\u2019, \u2018problem\u2019, and even \u2018marginalized non-issue\u2019.<\/p>\n
