As a socio-cultural anthropologist of sports and education, I am primarily interested in the ways in which sports coaches lead, instruct, and discipline their charges, as well as how these methods change or are similar in different temporal and spatial contexts.
Although both my book and my doctoral dissertation focused on discipline and coaching pedagogy, respectively, I have also completed research on a range of other issues, such as the rehabilitation of Japanese youth, the history of sports in Asia, the historical changes to Japanese sports policy, and the prevention of sports injuries in the United States.
As an advocate for applied anthropology and a wall-less university, I also write op-eds for popular audiences as well as help for-profit and non-profit businesses improve their strategies for success.
