We live in an increasingly inter-connected world often characterized more by media sensation and information overload than by mutual respect and the acceptance of difference. As a teacher, I always seek to impart knowledge while also helping to unleash creativity. I consider myself a lively, passionate teacher who engages each student on an individual level. I believe that a good educator is someone who teaches the material so well that by the time his students finish their course, he will have made himself obsolete. Toward that end, I constantly strive to find something unique to spark each learner’s desire to study on his or her own. In that sense, I am trying to teach myself out of a job. This is an essay I wrote in 2017 called “Summerhill and Me”, in the Neos magazine of the American Anthropology Association.
